On 4 Oct 1957, the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) launched the first satellite Sputnik-1 into the Earth’s orbit. Sputnik was an innovation that broke scientific, cultural, military, and political barriers and also marked the beginning of the US - USSR space race. This groundbreaking feat led us to learn more about our galaxy than ever before. Many technologies that we use in everyday life were developed as part of space research.
